Man’s inner thoughts come from one of two sources, either God or Satan. These thoughts spring forth from the enemy of man or the lover and creator of man. One’s thoughts can destroy; the other can bring Life. One way of thinking binds; the other liberates.
The nature that controls man will also control his thoughts. Man is either controlled by God’s nature or Satan’s nature. God’s nature is Light and Truth; Satan’s nature is death and lies. Satan blinds the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the glorious light of the Truth. Natural man’s mind--the carnal mind--is filled with utter darkness (Rom. 1:21).
Man is either what the Bible calls Spiritually-minded or he is carnally-minded. After one is born again, he is to begin a completely new thought Life. He is to be renewed in his thinking, from carnal to Spiritual.
The Bible says, “To be carnally minded is death...”--Rom. 8:6. This is the way of thinking that is according to the nature of Satan. This is the mind of the flesh.
The Bible also says, “To be Spiritually-minded is Life and peace.” This is the thought Life that is in harmony with the nature of God. This is the mind of Christ. God’s nature is the nature of Spiritual Life, the Life of God. Satan’s nature, or natural man’s nature, is the nature of spiritual death--the carnal nature. If a man is Spiritually- minded, then he will think God’s thoughts; and as a result, he will act like God. If an individual is carnally-minded, then he will think Satan’s thoughts and act accordingly. “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.”
Man is either ruled by God’s thoughts, which are Spiritual, or Satan’s thoughts, which are carnal. Man thinks
according to the truth, or untruth; his mind is either filled with darkness or light; one is his master. There is no inbetween ground.Man has no mind of his own. He has a will of his own which makes it possible for him to think upon the things hewishes, but he either yields his thoughts to God or to the devil. He has no life which is independent, or which makes him self-existent. Either God or Satan is his master. One spiritual power is either his Life or his death. Jesus said there were only two realms man could choose between--God and mammon.
There are only two spiritual forces active in this world and in the hearts of men. Whichever one has dominion in you will determine your thoughts and actions. You will live according to your inner thoughts and nature.
In the new birth God, placed his nature, which is Spiritual Life, within us. He has made it possible for us to choose to think the way we desire or the way He desires. We will never know the error in our minds until we see the truth revealed. We will then see the contrast of two conflicting forces striving for the soul of man. We shall see the comparison of Life and death; we shall see reality, the Life we were created to have. We then have a choice. Will we then follow after the light and leave darkness behind?
God desires to unveil the truth in Jesus Christ (His Word). He is the only way. As the light of truth is made known to us and we change willfully our way of thinking (repent), we become filled with the very consciousness of the Life of God. Our minds become renewed in God’s knowledge. We can then let the Life and power of God loose in us.
God is all in all. God is eternal. We are united with this Life now. He has made us recipients of Himself, His truth, nature, and Life. God now makes known the mystery of Himself, and we can become Spiritually-minded in Him. Light will rule our mind, which is eternal. We are no longer blinded by the darkness. The eternal Spirit of God rules our mind as He reveals Himself to us. He is our very Life now. We are what He is. “As He is so are we.”--1 John 4:17
In the new birth, God came to dwell in you. Everything that God is, is now in you. In order for God to have freedom in and through you to accomplish His will and to fulfill His desires, your mind must be renewed and put in harmony with His Life that now lives in you. God can will and work His own good pleasure in and through you, only to the extent that your mind is renewed. The Spirit’s purpose in teaching you is to show you what you are and what to think. You must think according to revelation knowledge as the truth appears and is illuminated to you. You are to embrace this knowledge of the Spirit as being your own Life. Your mortal body is being made alive by the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead. You are beginning to know exactly what happened when you were born again. This is what is meant in Colossians 3:1-4. “When Christ, who is our Life, shall appear...” Christ is our Life, and He is appearing through revelation of the Spirit, which is an unveiling of our true and new identity.
The Life of God in Christ is a gift to man. This is what 2 Tim.1:10 means when the Spirit says, “The grace of God which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began but is now made manifest (revealed) by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ who hath abolished death and brought Life (God’s) and immortality to light through the Gospel (The Good News).
The Spirit is revealing that He has given us Himself in all of His glory. We are no more, but it is Christ in us. We are now to set our affection on things above, Spiritual things-- things that pertain to Life and godliness. We are to mind the things of the Spirit (Rom. 8:5-6, Col.1:1-4). If we mind earthly things instead of the things of the Spirit, God says we will die (Rom. 8:13).
“As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” When we bring our minds into subjection to the knowledge of the Spirit, God is freely Himself in and through us. Then our thoughts are in harmony with what He is. As a result, our actions will also be in harmony with the Spirit of God.
The Life of God in Christ is revealed to us progressively. As this is done, we, as Sons, are matured and developed like unto the Father; and God begins to gain the ascendancy over our thought life. Our thinking is in harmony with the appearing of the truth.
“As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” The Holy Spirit will teach us His thoughts and guide us into all truth. He is Truth. We have been born again by the Spirit of God. God’s law is like begets like. God could only give birth to His own Life. He has given us Himself so that He may dwell, Live, and walk in us, unbound and unrestrained. Christ in us is our hope of glory (Col. 1: 27).
Little by little we are repenting. We are changing our way of thinking from ours to His. Every thought according to the truth is God in us. He is taking over our mind.
Every thought opposed to the truth is of the devil; it is satanic and full of darkness. We deny these thoughts, for they have come to destroy (John 10:10).
We must know the purpose of both God and Satan. Then we can recognize who is at work in our lives and the lives of others by the thoughts and suggestions that come to mind and the words that are spoken. We will not be ignorant of the devil’s devices. Both God and Satan desire to dwell within us, cause us to think their thoughts, and carry out their will here on earth. Both are spirits and work through man. One desires to do good, the other evil. One builds, the other destroys. One kills, the other gives Life.
God and Satan both work according to law, the law that forbids either to force man to obey his will; God ordained this so. Neither God nor Satan can force man to do his will; man always chooses for himself. Man does not have to yield himself to God and think His thoughts of truth; nor does he have to yield to Satan and think his thoughts of death. Man follows the path that he chooses.
Man will obey his thoughts. These thoughts spring from one of the two spiritual sources-- God or Satan. Man’s will can yield or resist the thoughts or suggestions that come to his mind. He can listen to Satan when he wants, or he can listen to God. Both God and Satan know that thoughts will soon develop into actions in harmony with that type of thought. Both desire to lead man their way by the use of thoughts. These thoughts bring about the “will of Satan” or the “will of God.” Both voices are ever present and wish to reach the heart and thought-life of man. Man hears the voice he listens to. Man becomes what his thoughts are. He can Live in the will of God which is to Love and witness to the truth, or he can do the will of Satan which is to steal, kill, and destroy. Whichever one he yields to, man becomes his slave. “Know ye not that to whom ye yield yourselves to obey, his slaves ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin (Satan) unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness (God).”--Rom. 6:16. Man is either a servant of Satan or a Son of God; he is not his own master.
So again, “As a man thinketh in his own heart, so is he.” God wants to show you His will, His Life and His truth. As He does this, you have the opportunity to repent (change your way of thinking).
God will help you into the knowledge of the truth, and darkness will flee from your mind. He will teach you to change your thoughts from death to Life, from negative to positive, from weakness to His strength, from sickness to His health, from fear to His confidence, from flesh to Spirit, from Satan to God.
This is Eternal Life, the Life that is and shall be forevermore. This is what God is, and He is yours and you are His. He has given us knowledge of Himself. This is the glory that God gave Jesus and that Jesus gave us, the union in One that we now have in Christ (John 17). This is the appearing of the truth. This is heaven (the Spirit), the unveiling of true Love, the very nature of the Father.
That our minds might be renewed with Spiritual knowledge is the hearts desire of the Father. “This is Life Eternal that they might know Thee, the only true God and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent.”--John 17:3. That God has made it possible for us to think His thoughts with Him and to forsake the old way is the greatest and most wonderful privilege that has ever been bestowed upon man. We have been called into fellowship (1 Cor.1:9).
That I might know Him and the power of His resurrection Life...”--Phil. 3:10. The realm of the resurrected Christ is where we are. That we might know this and understand the meaning should be our greatest desire. For to understand this is to understand God, and to understand God is to understand truth; for what He is, He has also made us to be in Christ. We are His workmanship created in Christ Jesus (Eph. 2:10)
