Can the believer detect when it is the devil who is controlling his thoughts? He can, but only if he understands the basic nature of God.
Satan, the prince of darkness, will never reveal himself for what he is because Jesus has already pointed out that he is a liar, a murderer, and a thief (John 10:10). No thief exposes himself as long as it is possible to remain concealed. That’s just the nature of Satan, to hide in the things of darkness. That’s his natural realm.
Jesus, the Christ, came to reveal the Father. In this revelation of the truth and goodness of God was also the contrast of darkness and evil. “The Light shined into the darkness and the darkness understood it not.”-- John 1:5. Darkness did not reveal the Light, but the Light revealed the darkness, for only Light makes manifest.
The Gospel of John says, “...and this is the condemnation, that Light is come into the world but men loved (identified with) darkness rather than the Light because their deeds were evil. For everyone that doeth evil (the words of the evil one) is avoiding the Light (God), neither will he come to the Light lest his deeds should be reproved (revealed and corrected). But he that doeth truth (believes or acts upon God’s Word) comes to the Light that his secrets may be made manifest that they are wrought in God.”--John 3:19-21.
The Apostle Paul says, “Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness; but rather reprove them, for it is shameful to even speak of those things which are done of them in secret. But the hidden things that are brought to Light are revealed by the Light: for whatsoever is made manifest is because of the Light. Therefore he says, awake you who are sleeping in the night and arise from your death and Christ shall bring enlightenment.”--Eph.5:11-14
It is the most natural thing for darkness to avoid the Light. It is also natural for the Light of God to reveal and overwhelm the darkness. It is supernatural. Light is always greater than the darkness.
Man must have the contrast that is afforded by the Light in order to recognize the difference.
Darkness is all that man has known apart from God. That’s because darkness only knows darkness and it cannot reveal the Light. If it were not for the existence of God, there would be no Light.
In Genesis we read that the very first thing God did after He created the heavens and the earth was to bring the Light. Listen--“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth and the earth was without form and void (there was no discernible image), and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters and God said, “Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided (separated) the light from the darkness. And God named (identified) the light day and the darkness He called night.”--Gen. 1:1-5
The first epistle of John also separates the Light from the darkness, but this time in a Spiritual way. Listen -- “...God is Light and IN HIM is no darkness at all. If we say that we are having fellowship with Him but continue to walk in the darkness, we lie and do not the truth.” (We are living a lie because we are not acting upon God’s Word.) “But if we live in the Light as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another...”--1 John 1:7
The reason God separated the night from the day in the very beginning was so that His creation, man, would always know where he stood. God did not want him to be confused or stumble in the darkness.
Jesus in speaking to His disciples once said, “Are there not twelve hours in the day. If any man walk in the day (Light), he will not stumble because he has the Light of the world. But if any man walk in the night (darkness), he stumbles because there is no light in him. I am the Light of the world; he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness (if we are walking in the darkness we are not following Him) but shall have the Light of Eternal Life, the Light of God. The light (window) of the body is the eye. If thine eye therefore be single thy whole body shall be filled with light. But if thine eye be filled with evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness.”-- John 8:12, 11:9-10, Matt. 6:22-23
The eye is the gateway to the mind. If we yield it to sin, then we become the prisoner of sin. To yield the eye to sin is simply to yield our members to Satan, the liar, the prince of darkness. Yes, Satan can direct our eyes, our ears, our tongue, our body if we yield them to him. In fact, he is actively seeking control of them.
For instance, any time we yield our members to fear, we are yielding to Satan’s control. Any time we forfeit our confidence in the Lord in any way, we are “giving place to the devil.” Whenever we become driven by our own desires or give into something as innocent as an unhappy thought, are we not stumbling in the clouds of darkness and deception cleverly arranged by the enemy? When we become discouraged for whatever the reason, we can be sure that it will trace back to the activities of Satan himself, for he goes about LIKE a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour-- (1 Pet. 5:8).
If the believer does not come to recognize the devil in all his subtle disguises and activities (no matter how logically camouflaged or innocent they may appear), victory will amount to nothing more than a desire to be rarely enjoyed.
God is NOT the author of fear, darkness, or confusion, nor is it His will that we be kept in ignorance and bondage. See 2 Tim. 1:7, l John l:5, and l Cor.14:33.
James says that every GOOD and PERFECT gift is from above and cometh down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variableness (changeableness), nor shadow of turning (James 1:16-17). In other words, there is no sin, darkness, ignorance, or imperfection in God. He is absolute Light and absolute victory. James also warns us, “...do not err beloved brethren...” In other words, make no mistake about your source. Light comes from God just as surely as darkness comes from the devil. The Bible often speaks in contrasts of good and evil, Light and darkness, bitter and sweet, flesh and Spirit, Life and death. Remember, we are talking about Spiritual things now, not material things.
One can clearly see that the Father has made it simple for His children. The message is, “God is Light and in Him there is no darkness at all…”--l John l:5. How we need to confess this over and over again until there is an accurate distinction within us regarding these two contrary and opposing forces. How can we live in victory any other way?
God wants man to be able to recognize the good from the evil--the night from the day, the truth from error. Webster defines error as, “the contradiction of facts--an *ILLUSION about the nature of reality, deviation from truth or accuracy, to mistake a lie for the truth or the truth for a lie.”
Paul said that if our gospel be hid, it is hid to those who are lost (stumbling in the darkness) in whom the god of this present evil world has blinded the minds of those who believe not less the glorious Light of the gospel of Christ who is the image of God should illuminate their darkened soul. (The gospel is the Light of the world.) “For God who commanded the Light to shine into the darkness hath shined in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”--2 Cor.4:3-6. Ignorance is darkness.
Isaiah 5:20 says, “Woe unto them who call evil good and good evil: that put darkness for Light and Light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.” Webster defines woe as “...extreme human suffering.”
There is no need for the believer to wallow in the darkness of defeat and discouragement. Defeat is darkness. The Father has separated the night from the day, the good from the evil, through His Son. “The darkness is past, the true light NOW shineth”--1 John 2:8. The child of God can now dwell securely in the God of Light. He is a child of the day and not of the night.
Realizing that the nature of the Father is Light and that very nature has become his own, he now has the ability to Live in vic¬tory, peace, and the joy of a new Life. As a new creation in Christ, he comes from above and not from beneath. He Lives a heavenly Life which rules and reigns over the darkness and despair of the world. He is a creature of the Spirit and therefore no longer dominated by the darkness of the flesh. Sin does not lord it over him--it is no longer his master. He has a new Lord!
He is alive in Christ forevermore. He can choose the good and refuse the evil. He Lives in victory because he Lives in God.
“Surely the people that once walked in darkness have seen a great Light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death and upon them hath the Light shined.”--Isaiah 9:2
Aren’t you glad that God has separated the night from the day?
